Noynoy Guilty of SCTEX issue?!

Alleged anomalies in the construction of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) that traverses the Cojuangco-owned Hacienda Luisita are much more controversial than the C5 issue hounding Senator Manuel Villar Jr., a congressman said Tuesday. At the resumption of the House Oversight committee hearing's inquiry into the issue, Cavite Rep. Jesus Crispin Remulla—a member of Villar's Nacionalista Party (NP)—said the national government paid P100 per square meter for the right of way of SCTEx to parts of the 600-hectare sugar plantation, when the actual value was only P8. "This is bigger," Remulla said when asked to compare the SCTEx to the C5 controversy hounding Villar. [See: Senate panel to Villar on C5: Return P622-billion fund to gov't]Remulla, brother of NP spokesman Gilbert Remulla, said the Cojuangcos should return the profit they gained from the sale of the land, which he said should have been donated to the government. The congressman linked Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Senator Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III to the controversy, saying Aquino is a "direct beneficiary" of the SCTex interchange being located within the plantation because it is owned by his family. Aquino, however, has long dismissed allegations linking him to the SCTEx controversy as politically-motivated, saying he had nothing to do with the SCTEx project as it was initiated during the Estrada administration. Misunderestimating The Philippine Left

There are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ leftists. ‘Good’ leftists must belong to a partylist group. They demand the inclusion of civil society groups in government transactions. They participate in tripartite meetings, they attend UN conferences, they hate Joma Sison, and they endorse the candidacies of Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas.

The ‘bad left’ is always wrong. It is dogmatic if it refuses to participate in the elections but it is opportunistic if it joins the elections. It is arrogant if it shuns coalition politics but it betrays the revolution if it builds an alliance with mainstream parties. The left is ridiculed if it fails to gather a big crowd during rallies; but it is also criticized (by armchair activists) if it succeeds in mobilizing its members and supporters in the streets.

A ‘bad leftist’ is a dead leftist. Bad leftists are harassed, abducted, tortured and killed in this part of the world. They are demonized as destabilizers and terrorists. They are not recognized as legitimate political players who can use valid political practices in the electoral arena. Hence, they are mocked if they build coalitions or endorse the candidacies of mainstream politicians.

If the left can do no right and if it cannot be allowed to succeed in parliamentary politics, its only option (and the only correct decision it can accomplish) is to surrender its political goals. Be irrelevant. Disappear. Build an NGO. This is the fantasy not just of the fascist state; but also the wet dream of liberal “fundamentalist freaks.”

********************************

Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza are often described in the media as leftist politicians. This is not wrong. But the practice of naming people and animals for who or what they really are is not applied to centrists and rightists. May kilala ba kayong pulitikong nagpakilala o ipinakilala bilang maka-kanan? Villar is a businessman-politician. Noynoy is the politician son of Cory and the brother of Kris. Gibo is the politician nephew of Danding who studied in Harvard. It is easy to add the leftist tag to Ocampo and Maza but writers often omit to mention the proper political background of Villar, Noynoy and Gibo. Imagine the impact of this seemingly objective writing on how the public perceives progressive leaders like Ocampo and bourgeois politicians like Noynoy. Ocampo’s politics is immediately placed under debate because he is already identified as a leftist while Noynoy’s political leaning is overlooked because his family ties are given more attention. Ocampo’s motive as a public servant is already suspect because of his ideology while Noynoy is introduced as a sincere (and reluctant) politician who is not motivated by any ideology. Rejecting ideology, denying ideology are ideological acts.

*******************************

Gibo speaks in behalf of Arroyo; Noynoy speaks in behalf of his family; Villar speaks in behalf of his party. We do not see each one of them as representing the whole political right and center. Meanwhile, the left is treated as a monolithic political bloc. The actions of one section of the left are attributed to all leftists in the country. Ocampo and Maza are leaders of popular partylist groups Bayan Muna and Gabriela. But academics and commentators want Ocampo and Maza to speak in behalf of ALL leftists – whether they are striking workers, arrested rallyists, student protesters, evicted farmers, exiled communists, and armed rebels.

A leftist is guilty of being a leftist. A leftist is held responsible for the sins committed by dead and living leftists. The weakness of one leftist is blamed on all leftists.

Meanwhile, we do not hear mainstream commentators and academics asking mainstream politicians to pay for the sins of the ruling class. There are no class dictatorships; only evil dictators, selfish leaders, and warlord dynasties. The sins of Quezon are blamed on Quezon alone. The sins of Marcos are the burden of the Marcoses alone. Arroyo’s transgressions are hers alone. We do not speak of the political center and right when discussing these abominations. The forces of domestic reaction have not yet apologized for plunging the country into darkness in the past century.

The liberal right-wingers are always reminding the public about the alleged excesses and blunders of the left. They are obviously suffering from pathological narcissism. They refuse to remember and recognize the bloody record of their reactionary ancestors and conservative gurus.

FYI: Yes, the extreme left has already apologized for its past mistakes.

********************************

Many writers have commented about the historic significance of the militant left’s endorsement for Villar. Let’s view it the other way around. A mainstream politician like Villar is willing to be openly endorsed by the left. A major candidate is not afraid to be identified with individuals who are accused by the military of supporting the rebel movement. A bourgeois party has two militant and anti-imperialist leftists in its senatorial ticket as adopted candidates.

According to a veteran activist, the left was ready to endorse Salonga in 1992 but the grand old man of Philippine politics requested the left not to publicize its endorsement. Was Salonga afraid that an endorsement from the left would alienate his voters? Maybe he was not impressed with the organized strength of the left.

Fast forward to 2009. Villar and other presidentiables have many good reasons to seek the support of the left. The electoral victories of the left in 2001, 2004 and 2007 signified many things: The left has a loyal following among the electorate; its progressive agenda is appreciated and supported by a core constituency; the red-baiting tactic of the state has lost its efficacy. An astute politician cannot afford to ignore the solid base of the left.

Villar’s brave decision to openly embrace a platform-based unity with the left has smashed the taboo in Philippine politics. From now on, the participation of the left will be expected in future electoral contests for top political posts.

But why Villar? Why not Noynoy?

The analysis of the left about the character of the Philippine political party system has not changed. The left continues to assert that politics in the country is dominated by the traditional elite. Villar and Noynoy are both members of the ruling class. If the left will endorse one of them, it should be based on the willingness of the candidate to promote a reform agenda. It was Villar who took the time to draft a document in response to the challenge of leftist groups to advance a people’s agenda in 2010. It was Villar who invited Ocampo and Maza to join his senatorial lineup as adopted candidates. Noynoy was never interested in seeking the support of the left. Maybe he wanted the left to endorse him quietly, a la Salonga in 1992. Noynoy and the mafia in the Liberal Party do not recognize and respect the political strength of the left.

************************************

Ambitious apostates (John Pilger’s term for ex-activists) are protesting the decision of Ocampo and Maza to endorse the Villar-Legarda tandem. They criticized this act as a betrayal of revolutionary principles. They did not notice the irony in their remarks. The people who turned their backs on the movement and those who had tirelessly attacked the left are now concerned about the revolution.

Let us assume they are sincere in upholding the purity of the leftist movement. What revolutionary principles were violated by Ocampo and Maza? What revolutionary goal was abandoned?

The anti-left gang is mad not because the left endorsed a presidential candidate. They are mad because the left has refused to endorse Noynoy Aquino.

**************************************

The left is ridiculed for behaving like a religious cult. It’s not a new accusation. It’s often raised by writers and academics every time they want to attack the politics of the left. The intention is to mock the ‘fanatical attitude’ of leftists. But this reasoning has lost the power to insult. Here is a relevant quote from Slavoj Zizek: “Instead of adopting such a defensive stance, allowing the enemy to define the terrain of the struggle, what one should do is to reverse the strategy by fully endorsing what one is accused of: yes, there is a direct lineage from Christianity to Marxism; yes, Christianity and Marxism should fight on the same side of the barricade against the onslaught of new spritualisms – the authentic Christian legacy is much too precious to be left to the fundamentalist freaks.”

*****************************************

According to French philosopher Alain Badiou, many liberal thinkers have this attitude towards the left: “As a public spectacle the Revolution is admirable, while its militants are contemptible.” There are many writers and intellectuals in the Philippines who are sympathetic to leftist causes but unkind and unfair to leftist militants. There are academics who are masters of subtlety and sarcasm when attacking trapos but blunt, brutal, and rude to leftist leaders. To borrow some words from the great economist Joseph Schumpeter, these anti-leftists “lack any organ for the perception of absurdity.”

How Kris and Noy are trouncing the Cory-Ninoy legacy

There’s something infinitely compelling about Kris Aquino and her show SNN (where, occasionally, she lets Boy Abunda talk). As I believe I’ve mentioned here elsewhere, it is a veritable treasure trove of slip-ups and improprieties by the Queen of the World.

As she pretends to impose her infinite goodness and charity, you see Kris holding back her truer self — a whining, self-centered brat. With every story or feature in the show, she needs to get in her two cents — and by that I mean adding banalities from her boring, materialistic existence of expensive handbags, personalized mini-buses, and gaudy dresses.

All the while of course, the irony seems to escape her that big brother Noy is soliciting money from the working class through his website of bombast and posturing.

I type this post while shaking my head at the result of the latest Pulse Asia survey where Noy continues to lead comfortably. Assuming Pulse Asia has its numbers right, about half of Filipinos still fall for the tired cliche of Noy being the only option for positive change.

The emotional appeal once again trounces reason and lessons of history.

If I don’t like Noy, it doesn’t mean I don’t like Cory or Ninoy, too. The electorate needs to learn that distinction. A vote for Noy is NOT a vote for the memory of Cory or Ninoy. A vote for someone else OTHER than Noy doesn’t mean we besmirch the legacy of the departed Aquino couple who helped shape our history and usher in a new era of democracy.

In fact, I believe in my heart that we would be doing a disservice to their memory if we elect someone on the basis of lineage — not ability. Isn’t that what they fought for? Isn’t that the essence of democracy? For other people to be given a chance to be heard and even to lead? A true democracy abhors monopolies or dynasties; it embraces plurality.

Thanks to utakngtilapia.com for this knee slapper!

A vote for Noy (which will further empower Kris, to be sure) will nullify the lessons we should have learned — lessons Cory and Ninoy taught us.

Remember, Cory wanted Noy to finish his senatorial term. She must have, in her wisdom, seen what would happen.

Merry Christmas, thinking Filipino!

Mom, can iI have your facebook account?

It’s clear that Noynoy Aquino is not above anything — not even hijacking his mom’s Facebook account so he would have a running start. How sad and pathetic.

Do you want to be his FB friend now?

Check out Totoong Pinoy’s great post.

Yellow Censorship

My good friend PinoyBuzz has been the subject of attacks from many pro-Noynoy cultists. You know, those Noynoy supporters who can’t really engage people in intelligent debate and whose best retort is the soon-to-be classic “Ah, basta Noynoy ako kasi anak siya ni Cory at Ninoy” line.

I found out yesterday that PinoyBuzz had been removed from the roster of contributors of the newly launched group blog AsianCorrespondents. From what I’ve heard, PinoyBuzz was the subject of incessant complaints from the Noynoy cultists who hate him but can’t seem to get enough of his blog posts.

Well, as a show of support to PinoyBuzz, who now holds the distinction of being the only blogger who got banned from his own blog, I’m re-posting his farewell post over at AsianCorrespondents. Here it is:

Let me tell you the story of how Pinoy Buzz came to be and how it is going to end.

For the past year, Pinoy Buzz (www.pinoybiz.blogspot.com) has gone from absolute obscurity to some level of regional recognition.

For a long while, I was at the bottom of the blog heap. My blog was dormant and my stats were absolutely nothing compared to the stats I have today. In December of 2008, I resolved to make www.pinoybiz.blogspot.com one of the more better known blogs in the Philippines.

I blogged persistently, like a mad man. I actually started spending more time on my blog than on my work.

I didn’t have a mission when I first hatched the idea of being the number one blogger in the Philippines, a goal which I think I will never reach. All I wanted to do, really, was to write about the things that, it seems, only I can see in the things that were happening all around me.

I was among the first to say that Bambee dela Paz was a fraud right in her own blog and that earned me a lot of scathing comments — including a blogger profile that insinuates that I am gay. (I laugh everytime somebody mentions it.)

Like most bloggers in the Philippines, I enlisted my blog in almost all of the blogstorms that erupted over one thing or another. There was the Terry Hatcher blogstorm, the kidnapping of 3 ICRC workers, Hayden Kho, Maui Taylor, Ondoy, etcetera. The baseline of my stats rose from a hundred pageviews a day to around 500 to 700 pageviews a day — this is the reward of joining bandwagons, you get popular.

My wife, of course, hated the fact that I spend hours upon hours a day tending to my free hosted blog. In order to appease her and show her that my efforts were actually making the money that we needed to raise our only child, I kept on updating her on my Google Adsense earnings — which I am not too proud to admit, had totaled to all of $70.00 which is more than I’ve actually spend on pre-paid broadband load. Of course, she snorted at the $70.00 and told me to spend more time on my real job, which at that time was to write press releases for Senator Richard Gordon.

I ignored her and passed her comment off as another one of those silly woman things that women tend to blurt out.

In my head I growled, “Ug! Ug! Me man! Me write blog and make millions of pesos through google adsense! Me show you! Ug! Ug! Silly woman! Make me coffee!”

The millions of pesos never materialized. I got reprimanded several times at work for not turning in the press releases I was supposed to write. But my blog, being freehosted as it was, finally started getting the stats I had only dreamt about when I decided to revive my dormant blog.

Then, out of the blue, Asian Correspondent contacted me and offered to hitch me up to their website in exchange for a certain amount of dollars a month. I didn’t know the lingo back then, but apparently, I was being syndicated or rather my blog’s traffic was being bought. I was even among a few renowned Filipino bloggers who were being invited to participate in Asian Correspondent.

I can’t tell you enough of how this bit of news elated me. Suddenly, blogging glory — much better than winning the Philippine Blog Awards — was at hand.

Of course, in transferring my blog from blogger to Asian Correspondent, I lost quite a bit of traffic from my previous posts. Thankfully, with a lot of work from the people of Asian Correspondent and a lot of blogging work from me, my stats started to come back.

I actually started blogging on Asian Correspondent by writing a lot of safe pieces which were restrained by the usual journalist ethics which most Filipino reporters IGNORE. But, after weeks of doing blog entries that really didn’t get a rise out of me or any of my friends. I realized that I wasn’t being true to myself.

To be sure, there are certain top bloggers who claim to be following ethical journalism standards and some who claim to espouse noble causes. None of them really lived up to their claims because they are all paid hacks — one way or the other.

Who was I kidding?

I learned about ethical journalism not by being a journalist but by being the one who had to write rejoinders to the breach of ethics of some Filipino journalists. (If there is one worthy blog entry I will try to write, it is about the ABSOLUTE HYPOCRISY OF CERTAIN FILIPINO JOURNALISTS. Just recently, Ampatuan got mauled by journalists who were campaigning to stop violence against journalists. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?)

Certain commenters point out that I am not an ethical journalist. To that, I say PAKSHET. What are you talking about? Ethical Filipino journalists are a rare breed, they are not the dominant specie in the Filipino media jungle and they are not very well known either.

As Bubby Dacer once said, “Everybody has a price.” And he actually mentioned a couple of names which, oddly, corresponded with the names mentioned by other PR guys.

No. I am not a Filipino Dyornalist.

I am a blogger. I make no claim to living up to standards of any sort. I am one man with a laptop, internet access, and a blog. I write as I please about the topics that interest me. Even after accepting the deal to be part of Asian Correspondent, I still insist on the idea that I am accountable to no one but myself.

For the past few weeks, I went on a rampage against Noynoy Aquino and his minions. This was not because of some misguided and rabid hatred for a political figure. This was because I lived through the years the fabled Cory Aquino administration and while we can credit her for the rise of Press Freedom, we cannot credit her for nation building.

The Cory Aquino legacy is the road paved with good intentions but led us to perdition. That legacy ought not to be repeated by anyone, much less Noynoy Aquino.

If I wasn’t clear about it in my previous entries on this blog, let me say it again:

Manny Villar, despite the C-5 scandal, is the lesser evil. Dick Gordon, despite being unpopular, is the best choice over Gibo Teodoro who is a close second. JC delos Reyes is better off as a councilor in Olongapo, Brother Eddie Villanueva is better off tending to his ministry, and Nicanor Perlas is not worth the trouble.

I didn’t expect to be popular for one reason or another. In fact, given the sentiments of most people, I expected to be less popular — even hated.

It was not easy being on the receiving end of some of the stupidest comments on Earth — really, come on guys, do some thinking before you comment.

My behavior on the internet has been lambasted by a lot of people, my motives have been questioned, and my credibility has been thoroughly assailed. If the internet were the UFC, I think I would be a bloody pulp by now — mostly blood, very little pulp with a lot of guts thrown in.

I may be notorious to some (especially among the pro-Noynoy legions out there) and I may be somewhat celebrated — albeit, in certain very small cliques who will disavow any association with me as soon as I post their real names. But, that hardly matters to me.

What matters is that I see that Noynoy Aquino is unfit for the Philippine Presidency and what matters is that I can blog about it.

So, how is it going it end? My stay with Asian Correspondent has hit a rough spot… a very rough spot.

Apparently, there was a deluge of complaints about my blog and Asian Correspondent has to take care of it reputation — which is understandable. I’ve made mistakes with previous entries and in light of the barrage of complaints from Noynoy cultists and others, I think the officers of Asian Correspondent has to make a decision that will be favorable to accomplishing their vision for their website.

I’ve asked them to reconsider their decision but I’m not really hoping for a change of mind. I am, after all, pretty risky. Then again, it’s usually the biggest risk that pays off the most.

So, yellow trolls, I guess you guys win… For now.

I just find it ironic that, while former President Corazon Aquino is credited for restoring press freedom in the Philippines, the rabid supporters of her son are now the ones apparently trying to curtail press or, as in this case, blog freedom. I wonder what the good senator has to say about this.
