How Kris and Noy are trouncing the Cory-Ninoy legacy

There’s something infinitely compelling about Kris Aquino and her show SNN (where, occasionally, she lets Boy Abunda talk). As I believe I’ve mentioned here elsewhere, it is a veritable treasure trove of slip-ups and improprieties by the Queen of the World.

As she pretends to impose her infinite goodness and charity, you see Kris holding back her truer self — a whining, self-centered brat. With every story or feature in the show, she needs to get in her two cents — and by that I mean adding banalities from her boring, materialistic existence of expensive handbags, personalized mini-buses, and gaudy dresses.

All the while of course, the irony seems to escape her that big brother Noy is soliciting money from the working class through his website of bombast and posturing.

I type this post while shaking my head at the result of the latest Pulse Asia survey where Noy continues to lead comfortably. Assuming Pulse Asia has its numbers right, about half of Filipinos still fall for the tired cliche of Noy being the only option for positive change.

The emotional appeal once again trounces reason and lessons of history.

If I don’t like Noy, it doesn’t mean I don’t like Cory or Ninoy, too. The electorate needs to learn that distinction. A vote for Noy is NOT a vote for the memory of Cory or Ninoy. A vote for someone else OTHER than Noy doesn’t mean we besmirch the legacy of the departed Aquino couple who helped shape our history and usher in a new era of democracy.

In fact, I believe in my heart that we would be doing a disservice to their memory if we elect someone on the basis of lineage — not ability. Isn’t that what they fought for? Isn’t that the essence of democracy? For other people to be given a chance to be heard and even to lead? A true democracy abhors monopolies or dynasties; it embraces plurality.

A vote for Noy (which will further empower Kris, to be sure) will nullify the lessons we should have learned — lessons Cory and Ninoy taught us.

Remember, Cory wanted Noy to finish his senatorial term. She must have, in her wisdom, seen what would happen.
